Independent small-animal clinic

Unhurried, whole-animal care on the edge of the Vale.

Fernwood is a family-run practice on Tanner's Row, looking after the dogs, cats, rabbits and small pets of Millbrook with the kind of patience you'd want for your own.

Caring for the neighbourhood since 2009
Our practice

A converted wheelwright's yard, and a promise to slow down.

Fernwood began in 2009 when Dr. Eleanor Whitcombe took over the old wheelwright's yard behind the market square and turned the timber workshop into a consulting room. The brick and beams are still there. So is the idea she started with: that a good appointment is one where nobody feels rushed.

We are deliberately a small practice. Two vets, two nurses, one very calm reception. That means the person who examines your dog in March is likely the same one who sees them again in September, and remembers that they hate the nail clippers.

"We'd rather run ten minutes late and get it right than move you through like a conveyor belt."

Most of our clients live within a mile or two, in Millbrook, Ashcombe and the cottages out along Weir Lane. We know the fox that patrols the allotments and which stretch of the towpath floods after rain. That local knowledge shows up in the advice we give, from tick season to which fields to avoid in lambing time.

We're proudly independent. No corporate targets, no upselling. If your pet doesn't need a treatment, we'll tell you so.

What we do

Everyday veterinary care, done properly.

We handle the great majority of what a household pet needs under one roof, and we'll tell you plainly when something is better sent to a referral specialist.

Health checks & consultations

A thorough nose-to-tail examination, time to talk through anything worrying you, and a written plan you can take home. Ten-minute slots feel too short to us, so ours run to fifteen.

Book online

Vaccinations & parasite control

Core and lifestyle vaccinations for dogs, cats and rabbits, plus year-round flea, tick and worming cover tailored to where you walk and who you live with.

Ask reception

Dentistry

Scale and polish, extractions and dental x-rays in our own theatre. Bad breath is rarely just bad breath, and dental pain is one of the most missed problems in pets.

By appointment

Soft-tissue surgery

Neutering, lump removals and routine soft-tissue procedures, with modern anaesthetic monitoring and pain relief that goes home with them. A nurse phones the same evening to check in.

By appointment

Diagnostics & imaging

In-house blood work, digital x-ray and ultrasound mean most answers come back the same visit, so we can start treatment while you're still in the room.

On site

Senior & end-of-life care

Gentle mobility and comfort clinics for older animals, and, when the time comes, home visits so that goodbyes happen somewhere familiar. We take this part of the job very seriously.

The people you'll meet

Small team, familiar faces.

Dr. Eleanor Whitcombe

Founder & Vet

Started Fernwood in the old workshop. Soft spot for grumpy old cats and complicated cases.

Dr. Raj Patel

Partner & Vet

Our surgery and dentistry lead. Cycles in from Ashcombe, rain or shine, most mornings.

Sophie Hartley

Head Vet Nurse

Runs the nurse clinics and the puppy socials. Impossibly calm with the wriggliest patients.

Marcia Adeyemi

Practice Manager

The voice on the phone and the one who remembers every pet's name. Keeps the whole yard running.

What our neighbours say

Trusted along the towpath and up the hill.

Our collie tore a pad on the towpath and they saw us within the hour. Dr. Patel talked me through every step and phoned that night to check on her. You don't get that everywhere anymore.

We put both rabbits on the Whiskers plan and it's paid for itself in peace of mind. Sophie showed the kids how to hold them properly. It feels less like a clinic and more like popping in to see friends.

The Okafor familyMillbrook Green · last month

Booked our old lab in for a dental and expected the worst. Instead they were honest that only two teeth needed doing, not the whole mouth another place had quoted. He's eating like a puppy again. Parking on the Row is tight, mind.
